A Boy and His Bot | Blog Updates

August is up! Get your wallpaper below. I won’t be able to add the calendar to the wallpaper for a while due to a time crunch I’m currently in but I think most of you will be fine without it ;)

I’m also in the middle of revamping this blog to operate somewhat differently than how I have been using it for the past year. The more I use my blog, the more I learn how people use it. I’m pretty excited to bring this new idea to the table so look for some changes in the near future!

Phew! Only 9 days late on this one but it’s finally here! ~~I will be adding the calendar dates later today but I’m assuming most people utilize these without them~~. Calendar is up! Enjoy :)

Tenacious Vision

I had this drawing of a rampant television in my sketchbook dating back to last October and I had always wanted to do something with it but I never knew what exactly. While brainstorming some ideas for this months wallpaper I was flipping through some old sketches and the idea was digitized.

Jon Contino

Born and raised in New York, Jon Contino is a designer, illustrator, and typographer. He is co-founder and creative director of design studio Onetwentysix and menswear brand CXXVI Clothing Company. Steadily developing a reputation for his hand-lettering, Jon continues to blur the boundaries between traditional and digital design methods.

Jon has a great eye for balancing type with his intended subject and his use of color palettes always have a nice contrast between letter forms, illustration, and background. Perhaps what I enjoy most is the grittiness and small imperfections within the letter forms that really add a human touch to something that can often seem completely mechanical.

Matthew Billington

Vancouver based collage illustrator/designer Matthew Billington is working on some pretty fun material that looks to be inspired by the great Lester Beall‘s style of work. Aside from illustration, Matthew also has a few motion graphics clips on his site so be sure to visit the links section below to check those out.

Partly what I admire of Matthew’s work is trying to decipher the message he’s put out onto the page. I’m a believer that design does not always have to be presented in such a way where the audience immediately understands the message. Make ‘em think for a little while and the meaning will become that much more significant.

Alberto Cerriteño is a Mexican illustrator & designer who now lives in Portland. His influences have helped him to develop a recognizable and unique style. Hints of traditional Mexican art influence his management of rich textures and decorative patterns. These make for an excellent contrast with the blending of desaturated colors and ink, sometimes featuring a vintage coffee finish.

Cerriteno completed the illustration work for the video above and is the opening credits animation for the Mexican feature movie, “Rock Marí”.

Character Design

I really admire the characters that Alberto creates. The colors are piercing, texture is nicely placed, and subtle shading combines for a fun and inspirational design that has a hand made, organic feel.

Hmmm….I don’t have a lot to say about Photographer Scott Moody’s photos other than the fact that they’re quite beautiful. Apparently Scott doesn’t have much to say either seeing as his ‘about’ section only says: “Enough about me….what about you?” but that’s alright, I keep going back to his photos anyway. Sorry for the delay once again. I blame Memorial Day weekend. I should be back on track here for the upcoming months though.

Just thought I’d mix things up again with this one and combine a photo/vector layout before I get too comfortable with a purely vector composition. No, there aren’t any subliminal messages hidden in this wallpaper. I’m not rooting for England in the World Cup ;)

I’m a history buff and with the recent archaeological findings highlighted on CNN in the past week, I thought it would be fun to dig up (get it?) some old illustration work from my illustration encyclopedia for some inspiration. Lo and behold, a few hours later, I came up with this kooky idea of a sea monster greeting a passing ship. Strange? Maybe. Interesting? Definitely. Enjoy!
